NEW YORK - August 20, 2015 — WCS reports that the groundbreaking Bolivian scientific expedition, Identidad Madidi, has discovered a new species of big-headed or robber frog (Oreobates sp. nov.) from the Craugastoridae family in Madidi National Park.

Hosted by the ¾Õ»¨ÊÓƵ (WCS) in partnership with I Love NY, the inaugural Cycle Adirondacks kicks off this weekend. WCS (¾Õ»¨ÊÓƵ) and Appalachian Corridor have partnered on developing a landowner tool to protect wildlife habitat. The guidebook, “Cohabiter avec la nature!” was developed in French to provide guidance on wildlife-friendly residential development and land-use planning in the Appalachians of Southern Quebec.

Bronx, NY – Aug. 13, 2015 – A pair of lesser adjutant storks (Leptoptilos javanicus) at WCS’s (¾Õ»¨ÊÓƵ) Bronx Zoo have successfully hatched two chicks – one of which was from an egg produced by another adult pair. The surrogate parents are caring for both chicks as if they were their own.

The Acehnese provincial Police (Polda Aceh), the East Acehnese Police (Polres Aceh Timur), and the ¾Õ»¨ÊÓƵ’s Wildlife Crimes Unit (WCU) announced today an enforcement action against wildlife poachers and a dealer for trading tiger parts. The perpetrators were arrested in Aceh Tamiang, Aceh on August 8, 2015. 

New York - August 11, 2015 - The Society for Conservation Biology has honored Dr. Stacy Jupiter—Melanesia Program Director for WCS (¾Õ»¨ÊÓƵ)— with its Early Career Conservation Award. The award celebrates the achievements of conservationists that have been out of school for ten years or less.

New York – Aug. 11, 2015 – A miniature zebu calf (Bos Taurus indicus) was born at the WCS’s (¾Õ»¨ÊÓƵ) Prospect Park Zoo.

New York - August 10, 2015 - A newly released study from WCS (¾Õ»¨ÊÓƵ) offers hope of conservation to the world’s low-profile and more unloved members of the animal kingdom. The study, which appears in the international conservation journal, Oryx, demonstrates that a “Wisdom of Crowds” method can successfully be used to determine the conservation status of species when more expensive standard field methods are not feasible.
