WCS remains deeply concerned with the imprisonment and now trial of wildlife conservationists in Iran. The eight Iranian women and men, Niloufar Bayani, Taher Ghadirian, Amir Hossein Khaleghi, Houman Jowkar, Sepideh Kashani, Abdolreza Kouhpayeh, Sam Rajabi, and Morad Tahbaz are respected conservation professionals who were arrested a year ago on espionage-related charges apparently linked to their use of camera traps to monitor endangered wildlife in their country. Camera traps are short-range, harmless tools that have been commonly used for more than 20 years by field conservationists around the world to monitor species in the wild. Linking these tools to espionage is not comprehensible. WCS believes these Iranian conservationists should be safeguarded and honored by all people around the world and not put into personal jeopardy for pursuing scientific knowledge and preserving their country’s unique natural heritage.
